Electric Motion Epure Parts Guide — Tires, Brakes, Chain & More

OEM and aftermarket parts guide for the Electric Motion Epure electric trials bike. Magura brakes, trials tires, chain drive, suspension, and what to stock for maintenance.

The Electric Motion Epure is unlike anything else in the electric dirt bike space. Where most e-motos target MX, enduro, or trail riding, the Epure is a purpose-built electric trials bike — engineered for technical section riding: rocks, logs, drops, and slow-speed balance work. It has no seat, no lights, and produces almost no noise. It's a niche machine with a passionate owner base, and parts availability matters a lot when something needs replacing.

What Makes the Epure Different

  • No seat — trials bikes are ridden standing up, always
  • 21"/18" wheel sizing — much smaller than MX bikes; trials-specific sizing
  • Magura brakes throughout — MT5 calipers, 185mm rotors, mineral oil only
  • Very low power consumption — trials riding uses short bursts, not sustained throttle; the 48V 1.7kWh pack goes a long way
  • Tech fork + Reiger rear shock — European suspension components, not the Chinese units on most e-motos
  • Made in France — Electric Motion is a French brand with a proper dealer network

1. Brakes (Most Critical System)

The Epure uses Magura MT5 brakes on both ends with 185mm rotors. Magura is a German hydraulic brake specialist — their MT5 is the standard of the trials world. The key thing to know: Magura brakes use mineral oil (Magura Royal Blood), not DOT fluid. Mixing fluids destroys seals.

  • Front Brake Pads (Magura MT5): $49.99
  • Rear Brake Pads (Magura MT5): $31.55
  • Magura Royal Blood Mineral Oil: $13.99
  • Brake Lever — Magura HC3 / MT5: $171.00
  • Front Brake Rotor 185mm: $150.99
  • Rear Brake Rotor 185mm: $158.99

Rear brake feel is everything in trials. Pad compound matters — sintered pads perform more consistently in wet/muddy conditions, while organic pads offer better modulation in dry. The OEM pads are a good starting point. Inspect pad thickness every 8–10 hours.

Bleed brakes at least once per season. Royal Blood is the correct fluid — there is no substitute. A small 100mL bottle ($13.99) is enough for a full bleed on both ends.

2. Tires

Trials tires are specialty items and not interchangeable with MX tires. They use a bias-ply construction, very soft rubber compound, and a pattern designed for traction on rock and root at near-zero pressure (5–8 PSI is normal for trials).

  • Front Tire — 21" Trials (OEM): $191.99
  • Rear Tire — 18" Trials (OEM): $380.99
  • Michelin X-Light Front 2.75/21: $207.99
  • Michelin X-Light Rear 4.00/18: $312.99
  • Front Inner Tube 21": $19.99
  • Rear Inner Tube 18": $61.99

The Michelin X-Light is the tire of choice for most competitive trials riders — it's widely used in indoor and outdoor Beta/Sherco/Gas Gas competition. Rear trials tires are genuinely expensive ($300+) due to specialty construction and low production volumes. They also last much longer than MX tires because trials riding doesn't generate the sustained spinning that wears knobs off.

3. Chain Drive

Trials riding stresses the chain differently than MX. The torque loading is sudden and often at near-zero speed (standing on a rock, trying to roll a tire over an obstacle). Mud and rock debris contaminate the chain constantly. Check chain tension and stretch regularly — replace chain and sprockets together when worn.

4. Suspension

The Epure uses premium European suspension: a Tech trials fork up front and a Reiger rear shock. Both are tuned specifically for trials feedback — they work very differently from enduro or MX suspension (much softer spring rates, designed for ultra-precise feel at near-zero speed).

Fork seals on trials bikes wear out faster than expected due to the constant flex cycling (no sustained high-speed travel — just slow articulation and impact loads). Change fork seals every 40–60 hours, or at first sign of oil weeping. The fork oil service on the Tech fork is straightforward — refer to the EM service manual for volume and viscosity spec.

5. Grips

  • OEM Trials Grips: $185.99
  • ODI Longneck Soft Grips (Trials): $39.99

ODI Longneck grips are the standard upgrade for trials riders who find the OEM grips too firm. The soft compound provides better vibration dampening and feedback through technical sections. At $39.99 vs $185.99 for OEM, it's an easy choice.

6. Electrical Parts

  • OEM Throttle Assembly: $209.99
  • OEM Controller / ESC: $599.00
  • OEM Electric Drive Motor: $899.00
  • Battery Pack 48V ~1.7kWh (2024 Race / Sport): $2,499.00
  • Battery Pack 48V ~1.6kWh (2022): $93.99

7. Wheel Bearings

Change wheel bearings annually or when you detect play — grab the wheel rim and check for any movement. At $10.99 each, there's no excuse to ride on bad bearings.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Before every ride: Brake lever feel and pad thickness check, chain tension, tire pressure (aim for 5–8 PSI front and rear for most terrain)
  • Every 8–10 hours: Chain lube, brake pad visual, linkage bearing check
  • Every 30–40 hours: Fork seal inspection, chain and sprocket assessment
  • Annually: Fork oil change, brake fluid flush (Royal Blood), linkage bearing replacement, wheel bearing check

Frequently Asked Questions

What brake system does the Electric Motion Epure use?

The Electric Motion Epure uses Magura MT5 hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, with 185mm rotors on both ends. Magura brakes use mineral oil (Magura Royal Blood), not DOT fluid. This is an important distinction — do not use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 in Magura brakes. Replacement pads are available as front ($49.99) and rear ($31.55) separately because the caliper positioning differs.

What tires does the Electric Motion Epure use?

The Epure uses 21" front and 18" rear trials-specific tires. These are very different from MX or enduro tires: trials tires are bias-ply, softer compound, with a distinctive knobby pattern optimized for grip on rocks, roots, and technical terrain at near-zero pressure. The Michelin X-Light front is $207.99 and rear is $312.99. OEM replacements are $191.99 front and $380.99 rear. Both are specialty items with limited availability — order ahead.

Is the Electric Motion Epure street legal?

Generally no, without modifications. The Epure is designed as a competition trials bike for off-road use. It does not come with lights, turn signals, or a horn from the factory. Some Epure Race and Epure Sport versions have different specs — check local regulations before attempting registration. For off-road trials use, no registration is typically required on private land.

What is the battery life of the Electric Motion Epure?

The Epure Race and Epure Sport (2024) use a 48V ~1.7kWh battery pack. Trials riding is very stop-and-go with frequent low-current coasting, so battery life is much longer per session than MX-style riding. Most Epure riders report 3–5 hours of technical section riding on a single charge, though this varies significantly with terrain and power mode.

How often should I replace the chain on my Electric Motion Epure?

Trials riding puts unusual stress on the chain — frequent hard stops, slow-speed torque loading, and exposure to rocks and mud. Inspect chain stretch every 10–15 hours with a chain wear indicator tool. Replace it well before the wear limit to protect the sprockets. OEM replacement chain is $111.99.
