Brake fluid is one of the most dangerous parts to get wrong on an electric dirt bike. Mineral oil and DOT fluid are chemically incompatible — mix them and you'll destroy the seals within one ride. The result is brake failure, and in the best case, an expensive master cylinder rebuild. Know your spec before you open that reservoir.

Mineral Oil vs DOT — The Core Difference
These are two completely different hydraulic fluid chemistries. They do the same job (transfer braking force through the system), but they are not compatible with each other.
Mineral Oil
Used by: Sur-Ron, Talaria, Segway, 79Bike, Ventus V1, Electric Motion Epure, and many others. Mineral oil is petroleum-based, non-hygroscopic (does not absorb water), and is gentler on painted surfaces if it spills. It requires seals specifically designed for mineral oil. The two main brands in the e-moto world:
- Magura Royal Blood — the original trials/e-moto mineral oil. Used by Talaria and Electric Motion. $11.99 (100mL)
- Maxima Mineral Brake Oil — wider retail availability. Same spec. $12.99 (120mL)
- Sur-Ron OEM Mineral Oil — $18.99. Works on any mineral oil system. View
- Tektro Mineral Oil (Segway-specific): $13.99
DOT Fluid (3, 4, 5.1)
Used by: Rawrr, KTM, Zero, E Ride Pro Type 2, Stark Varg, Ventus V1+. DOT fluid is glycol-based and hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and degrades braking performance. This is why DOT fluid should be flushed annually. DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are all compatible with each other (same glycol base) — higher-rated fluid in a lower-rated system is fine.
- DOT 4 — Rawrr Mantis: $24.99
- DOT 4 — KTM Freeride E-XC: $24.99
- DOT 5.1 — Stark Varg: $18.99
- DOT 3 — E Ride Pro Type 1: $8.99
- DOT 4 — E Ride Pro SS 3.0 / SR: $8.99
- Motul DOT 4 — Universal: $16.99 — works on any DOT 4 system
DOT 5 (Silicone) — Do Not Use
DOT 5 is silicone-based and is NOT compatible with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 systems. No electric dirt bike in the catalog uses DOT 5. If you see DOT 5 at a hardware store, avoid it — it's for specific military/classic vehicle applications only.
How to Flush Brake Fluid
Flushing is a two-minute bleed per caliper once you have the right supplies:
- Top up the reservoir with fresh fluid
- Attach a syringe or bleed kit to the caliper bleed nipple
- Pump the lever slowly until fresh, clear fluid comes through
- Close the nipple with lever held in, release lever
- Top up reservoir to the max line
For mineral oil systems: use a dedicated mineral oil syringe — DOT fluid contamination will destroy the seals even in small amounts.
